The Local Area

The beautiful village of Itchen Abbas is situated just four miles from the nearby Winchester City Centre and is a favourite destination for walkers and trout fishers.

The village runs alongside the River Itchen where many trout fishers spend their afternoons trying to catch the trout that live there.

Our pub is a perfect stopping point to refuel if you intend on visiting Itchen Abbas to enjoy the scenic route that many walkers have enjoyed in the past. The wonderful scenery alongside the River and the valley make this perfect route for all walkers that visit the village.

The village holds a lot of history and was reguarly visited by Novelist Charles Kingsley who used Itchen Abbas as inspiration for the setting of his novel 'The Water Babies'.

The village also features in the old Hampshire Folk Song 'Avington Pond' and is also the site of Sir Edward Grey's  fishing hut, where he spent the night before continuing his travels to London before announcing the United Kingdom's entry to first World War.

Itchen Abbas also is the site of a wonderful church of England Parish which was designed by the Normans and still retains its original Norman doorway.

With so much to explore and heritage to the village, it really is the perfect place for a weekend getaway to enjoy some walking, trout fishing or just exploring the local village.
